A Letter
to New Parents
CONGRATULATIONS upon the birth
of your child! Because your child
was born with Trisomy 21, it is
our desire to help you gain information
and support for the journey that
lies ahead.
The birth of a new baby is, and
should be, a time for celebration
and the feeling of joy. Your baby
may not be exactly as you have dreamed,
but please let us assure you that
your baby is more like other babies
than unlike. In fact, your baby is
a baby first and foremost, and this
unexpected diagnosis is just a part
of who your child is. Just like all
babies, your baby needs you for your
guidance, your safe-keeping and,
most importantly, your nurturing
love.
We realize that with the birth of
your child with Down syndrome, you
may have entered into a whole new
world - one that can be confusing
and filled with conflicting emotions
at first. It is our hope that through
information and support, you will
be able to gain an understanding
of your feelings, of your baby's
unique needs, and of the love your
baby has to offer.
Our organization has a "First
Call" Parent Visitation program,
which consists of trained parent
volunteers. We are here to talk at
any time, whether it is in the hospital,
at your own home, at a coffee shop,
on the phone, or via email. Each
volunteer is more than willing to
answer questions and offer support.
We would consider it an honor and
a privelege to be a resource to you
and your family.
